The Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Reserch

President's Greeting

I assumed the office of the president of the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research in May 2013. It is really more of an honor than I deserve, and I fully realize my responsibility to represent the society with its almost 30-year history. I would like the members of the society to know how grateful I am for your additional guidance and cooperation, in addition to your continuing support.

The bylaws of the society show that the society was established with the aim of discussing various problems about bones and other hard tissues for the further development of such investigation. The bone/mineral metabolism research is an interdisciplinary, cross-sectional, and multi-layered area of investigation that is related to all fields of basic medicine, in addition to the clinical fields of dentistry, internal medicine, and orthopedics. We mainly discuss bone/mineral metabolism, which protects vertebrate animals including human and supports the foundations of their lives.

On the other hand, clinical medicine has developed significantly in the field of bone/mineral metabolism. Thanks to the development of drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis, bone mass and quality have improved, enabling a decrease in the numbers of bone fractures. This new development was based on the results of many basic research investigations in Japan, including RANKL and cathepsin K, which were discovered by members in this society. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Japan is now leading the world in bone and mineral research.

For the further development of bone and mineral research, we have changed this home page of the society to mobilize young power and interests. In addition, we established a consortium to enlighten 13 subspecialty societies of internal medicine with respect to the attractive relationship(s) between bone metabolism and bone metabolism-related diseases. Such missions are also needed in the fields of basic medicine, dentistry and surgery. Furthermore, as one of the major members of IBMS and IFMRS, we are developing bone/mineral metabolism research and regenerative medicine of the skeletal system/hard tissues. I really hope to create the foundation for such new developments, together with the wisdom of the society members. I would once again like to ask for your support and cooperation.

The Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research (JSBMR) is a professional medical/scientific society established to promote the study of problems pertaining to bones and other musculoskeletal tissues and mineral metabolism through annual scientific meetings and official Journal (Journal of Bone Mineral Metabolism).

The Society was founded at first as a research cooperative meeting in 1967, and developed to the JSBMR in 1982.
The first annual meeting was held by Professor Norimasa Hosoya, Tokyo University, in 1983.

The JSBMR membership comprises physicians, dentists, basic scientists, and clinical investigators in bone, mineral metabolism, and related fields.
Current membership numbers approximately 2,200. Membership of the JSBMR is to be classified as follows
